End verbal abuse, bullying and harassment
Discover the communication secrets to
prevent and de-escalate conflict – at work,
on the playground, at home and in life
In 1983, Dr. George Thompson took his 10 years as a university professor and 5 years as a police officer (yep, a cop with a Ph.D.) — and founded the Verbal Judo Institute.
Since then and until his death in 2011, he published four books (with over 300,000 copies sold) and trained over 1 million public safety professionals from all over the world. He has been interviewed scads of times by the national news media– ABC, CBS, CNN, 48 Hors, Inside Editions and NBC (including Tom Brokaw).
But, it’s possible you have never heard about him.
Here’s why
For most of Doc’s career, he focused his efforts on police, corrections and security professionals. In that arena almost everyone knows of Doc — because what he teaches works.
In fact, his structured communication methodologies are now embedded in the training curriculum of thousands of organizations — from the smallest police departments to the largest agencies — with transformational results.
But, here is what’s interesting…
Even though he developed communication methodologies for public safety, we hear all of the time about the positive impact it has on our student’s personal lives.
That’s why, in 2010, he decided to join forces with other conflict management and personal development experts to expand his reach to other markets — including business, education, and healthcare — and to personal applications, including adult verbal abuse and youth bullying.
He decided that everyone who might encounter verbal attacks or abuse should have access to his training — not just the police, corrections and security professionals he had trained for over 27 years.
His communication methodologies are now under the banner of Verbal Defense & Influence — but the focus is still on redirecting people’s behavior with words.
In police, corrections and security we call this “generating voluntary compliance” — a powerful outcome in that profession because it saves lives. But, as mentioned above, we’ve discovered it also enhances cooperation and collaboration within a team, improves customer service and sales, and prevents bullying and verbal abuse.
Verbal Defense & Influence is about preventing conflict and, if it occurs, ensuring that it doesn’t escalate and cause emotional or physical harm.
That’s critically important on the street but it’s also valuable in dealing with spouses, children, bosses, employees, students, and customers. Even kids can use it to protect themselves from bullying.
In other words, anyone interacting with other human beings should know Doc’s structured communication methodologies.
